“Diplomacy First”... Trump Blocks Israel’s Plans to Attack Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

Former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly blocked Israel’s military plans to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities and instead chose to pursue a diplomatic solution. On April 17 (local time), The New York Times cited multiple senior U.S. administration officials and confidential meeting records to report this development.

According to the report, in early April, Trump communicated to Israel that the U.S. would not support a strike on Iran’s nuclear sites, which subsequently led to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. Israel had been planning an airstrike targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities for the following month, and U.S. military support was considered essential for the operation’s success.

Internal U.S. Government Conflict Between Hawks and Moderates… Ultimately “Chose Negotiation”

According to The New York Times, the plan shared by the Israeli government with the U.S. involved a combination of special forces operations targeting underground nuclear facilities alongside large-scale airstrikes, with U.S. strategic bomber support being a critical factor for the operation’s success.

The Israeli military had already conducted multiple bombing drills and operational simulations, indicating that preparations were well advanced. However, the special forces operation was scheduled for October, while Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly hoped for an earlier timeline.

Consequently, Israel attempted to revise the plan toward a prolonged airstrike campaign contingent on U.S. Air Force participation, but growing skepticism within the U.S. government led to a breakdown in cooperation.

Opposition Within the U.S.… Intelligence Chief Warns of Risk of Escalation

According to reports, Tulsi Gabbard, Director of the U.S. National Intelligence, recently warned in an intelligence assessment that “a U.S. military buildup could trigger a full-scale conflict in the region.” This reflects a cautious stance concerned about the potential expansion of violence in the Middle East.

Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hekse also expressed skepticism toward military action, leading the U.S. administration to shift its focus toward prioritizing diplomatic channels over military support.

Consideration of B-2 Bomber Deployment… Is the U.S. Preparing for Potential Military Action?

Interestingly, despite the diplomatic stance, the U.S. appears to have been preparing the deployment of strategic weapons. Reports indicate that the U.S. military moved six B-2 bombers—capable of carrying 30,000-pound bombs designed to strike Iran’s underground nuclear facilities—to the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean, and was also considering deploying additional fighter jets.

This suggests that the U.S. kept the option of direct military intervention open, employing a flexible “pressure plus diplomacy” strategy that toggled between diplomatic engagement and military readiness depending on the situation.

The Trump administration’s decision is viewed as choosing diplomatic advantage amid concerns over nuclear proliferation in the Middle East and the risk of military conflict. However, there are worries that this may cause a temporary rift in strategic coordination with Israel, and the international community is closely watching whether negotiations with Iran will yield substantive results.
