Turkey Hosts the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum
From April 11 to 13, the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum was held in Antalya, a resort city in southern Turkey. The forum was attended by approximately 4,000 participants, including 20 heads of state, 74 minister-level officials from 140 countries, and numerous heads of international organizations. Under the overarching theme, “Reclaiming Diplomacy in a Fragmented World,” over 50 sessions were conducted.
President Erdoğan’s Keynote Speech
President Erdoğan pointed out that while human technology continues to advance, the international system has failed to keep pace. He emphasized that diplomacy must be strengthened in a “human-centered, creative, and future-oriented” manner. Highlighting the slogan “The World is Bigger than Five,” he stressed the need for a fairer and more representative international system, urging for reforms of the United Nations Security Council.
President Erdoğan also affirmed that “Turkey does not covet any nation’s territory, sovereignty, or resources and can offer direct solutions to global conflicts and crises.” He further stated that Turkey is prepared to uphold the dignity and rights of the Palestinian people and to safeguard stability in Syria.
Restoring Diplomacy in a Fragmented World: Directions
Multiple speakers at the forum agreed that, to “restore diplomacy in a fragmented world,” all nations must collaboratively design the future. Philemon Yang, President of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized that “diplomacy is the most powerful tool granted to humanity, and the UN system must change to restore diplomacy.”
Borut Pahor, former President of Slovenia, expressed concern that “the international community is increasingly moving away from multilateralism and reverting to national interest-centered approaches.” He strongly criticized the UN Security Council’s permanent membership system, stating that “its failure to punish clear aggressors has become an obstacle to peacebuilding.”
Significance of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum
Since 2021, the Antalya Diplomacy Forum has been a major event led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, bringing together government officials from key countries and experts from academia to discuss various regional and global issues. Through this forum, the Turkish government aims to strengthen its geopolitical standing, expand diplomatic influence, and create opportunities for international cooperation across fields such as the economy, energy, and security. This year’s meeting is also regarded as having largely achieved these objectives.
