OpenAI will build the world's largest AI data center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as part of the "Stargate" project. This was announced during U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the UAE, where he met with UAE President Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This marks Stargate's first international venture. OpenAI had previously announced the Stargate project in January to build a large-scale data center in the U.S. in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle.
UAE's Ambition to Lead the AI Industry
This project is seen as a key opportunity for the UAE to become a global leader in AI technology. Stargate UAE will be located at the newly established UAE-U.S. AI Campus in Abu Dhabi. This campus will collaborate with U.S. AI companies like Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank, with support from a UAE sovereign wealth fund, to develop and apply 5-gigawatt technology.
The UAE-U.S. AI Campus will be the largest facility of its kind built outside the United States. The Abu Dhabi Media Office stated that Stargate UAE will be built by G42 and operated by OpenAI and Oracle. The partnership will also include zero-trust security, Cisco's AI-powered connectivity, and NVIDIA's Grace Blackwell GB300 systems. Additionally, a science park will be built to minimize carbon emissions by using energy sources like nuclear and solar power to power the computing infrastructure.
Once completed, the data center is expected to become a major AI hub that will far exceed the capacity planned for Stargate's first U.S. campus. It is also expected to expand AI infrastructure to major regions worldwide and provide sustainable AI capabilities to many countries. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the initiative as a bold move that could transform the UAE into a key player in the AI industry and a first step toward enabling AI technology to contribute globally. As part of the collaboration, the UAE will become the first country to offer OpenAI's ChatGPT service nationwide to both government agencies and residents.
