Stargate UAE: OpenAI to build its largest AI data center in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has secured the establishment of the world’s largest AI data center, announced during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he met with UAE President Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan as part of the Stargate Project initiative.

This development signifies not merely the construction of an AI data center, but also the first overseas expansion of the Stargate Project.

In January, OpenAI, in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle, announced the Stargate Project, aimed at building large-scale data centers within the United States.

The UAE’s Commitment to Dominating the AI Industry

This project represents a major opportunity for the United Arab Emirates to emerge as a global leader in AI technology. Leveraging its strategic location and rapid implementation capacity, it is expected to enhance global accessibility to the AI industry.

Stargate UAE will be constructed within the newly established UAE–U.S. AI Campus in Abu Dhabi, which will develop and deploy 5-gigawatt technologies in collaboration with U.S. AI companies—including Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank—supported by the UAE’s sovereign wealth fund.

Establishment of the World’s Largest AI Campus

The UAE–U.S. AI Campus will be the largest facility of its kind built outside the United States, providing 5 gigawatts of AI data center capacity and computing resources.

According to a statement from the Abu Dhabi Media Office, Stargate UAE will be constructed by G42 and jointly operated by OpenAI and Oracle. The collaboration will incorporate zero-trust security, AI-powered connectivity from Cisco, and NVIDIA’s Grace Blackwell GB300 systems.

To minimize carbon emissions, the campus will utilize nuclear and solar energy sources, and a scientific complex dedicated to advancing computing infrastructure will also be established as part of the project.

Expected to Serve as a Major AI Hub and Expand Infrastructure

Once completed, the data center is expected to serve as a major AI hub, far exceeding the capacity planned for Stargate’s first U.S. campus. It is anticipated to expand AI infrastructure to key regions around the world and provide AI capabilities to many nations in a sustainable manner.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the initiative as a bold move that could transform the United Arab Emirates into a central player in the global AI industry, emphasizing that it marks the first step in enabling AI technologies to contribute to the world at large.

As part of this collaboration, the UAE will become the first country to offer OpenAI’s ChatGPT services nationwide, accessible not only to government institutions but also to residents across the Emirates.
