Leaders share view on linkage between stability on the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East

South Korea has stepped up diplomatic engagement with key Middle Eastern countries through a series of summit talks, underscoring a shared recognition that peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East are closely interconnected.

According to diplomatic sources, South Korea has recently held high-level talks with Middle Eastern leaders to discuss cooperation on conflict mitigation and international peace, stressing the importance of dialogue-based solutions and multilateral diplomacy.

Egypt summit highlights joint commitment to peace

On Nov. 20, 2025, the South Korean President held a summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, where the two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation aimed at promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East.

During the meeting, the leaders shared the view that both regions face prolonged geopolitical tensions and that diplomatic engagement remains essential to managing conflicts. They also agreed to expand cooperation beyond political and diplomatic affairs to include economic, cultural, educational and defense-related fields.

South Korea conveyed its position that continued international support for dialogue and denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula remains crucial, while Egypt expressed interest in contributing to broader international peace initiatives, according to officials.

Energy and security cooperation discussed with Türkiye

The South Korean president also met with the president of Türkiye on Nov. 24, 2025, where the two sides discussed cooperation in energy security and regional stability.

The leaders agreed to enhance collaboration in the nuclear and energy sectors and shared concerns over global energy supply stability. They emphasized the need for sustained bilateral cooperation to address regional and international challenges through diplomatic means.

Diplomatic ties established with Syria

On April 10, 2025, South Korea formally established diplomatic relations with Syria, marking a step toward broadening Seoul’s diplomatic outreach in the Middle East.

The government said the move provides a framework for future engagement, including humanitarian assistance and post-conflict cooperation, while expanding diplomatic communication channels in the region.

Continued engagement with Gulf states

South Korea has also maintained close communication with key Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, through high-level consultations focused on energy, infrastructure, defense industry and economic cooperation.

Officials said regional stability in the Middle East has direct implications for global security and economic conditions, adding that Seoul will continue strategic dialogue with regional partners.

“Middle East stability linked to peace on Korean Peninsula”

A South Korean government official said peace on the Korean Peninsula and stability in the Middle East should not be viewed as separate issues.

“They are interconnected within the broader international security environment,” the official said. “Managing tensions through dialogue and diplomacy is essential for both regions.”

Observers note that South Korea’s relatively neutral diplomatic profile in the Middle East positions it to play a constructive role in peace-oriented cooperation, while maintaining its core security partnerships.

The government said it will continue to expand summit diplomacy with Middle Eastern nations as part of its broader efforts to promote peace and stability in line with its foreign policy priorities.
